What's Hot: Working With KU Biomedical Core Laboratories

Friday, September 14, 2012

Core laboratory/research staff presented talks on the ‘nuts and bolts’ of working with their laboratory including equipment available to the researcher, types of services provided, examples of forms to complete, and general procedures. Core laboratories help researchers:

  • They can empower your research program
  • They can enable things you wouldn't do otherwise
  • They can actually leverage your research dollars

Core labs provide a way to empower your research program, to enable you to do things that you wouldn't ordinarily do if these core labs weren't here.  The more you know about these core labs the more you can think about incorporating them into your research and the more power you'll be able to draw by using them.

Most investigators don't think about the degree to which that leverages research dollars because the cores are subsidized, one way or another, by some entity or grant.  To the extent that these cores are subsidized, you can buy their expertise and access very efficiently using grant dollars.  Don't think of the core labs as expenditures, think of them as a gift to your research program.
